Stepp into live theatre
The Steppenwolf Theatre remains one of the premier theatres in Chicago, but that doesn’t mean it’s off-limits to frugal city dwellers. In fact, the Steppenwolf offers some of the best ticket deals in town. For starters, teens and students can use their poor-but-being educated status to their advantage; high school students can attend “MaTEENĂ©e” performance (followed by a discussion with cast members) for $15 (see the Family Performance Series on the Steppenwolf’s website for a schedule), while students of any age can take advantage of a half-price subscription to the Steppenwolf season, which means five world-class plays will cost as little as $110. And for all performances, students can purchase $15 standby rush tickets on the day of performances, one hour per curtain. (There is a limit of one ticket per person, and student IDs are required.)
For those who have put their skullcaps in the closet, don’t despair! Steppenwolf’s Twenty for $20 program ensures that twenty $20 tickets are available for most subscription shows, on the day of performance starting at 11am (Mon-Sat) and 1pm (Sunday). And for last-minute decisions to visit the theatre on a whim, half-price tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis one hour prior to most subscription shows (limit two tickets per person).
The Steppenwolf Theatre is located at 1650 N. Halsted St. Public transportation is recommended; take the Red Line “L” to North Avenue and walk north to the theatre, or take the #8 Halsted bus, which stops in front of the box office. Visit www.steppenwolf.org for box office hours as well as a full schedule of performances and special discounts.
